If they try to block the old AIM versions I'm writing a local proxy to tunnel through the new AIM 7 protocol.

If they're serious about it, it's a different login server that uses an encrypted OSCAR protocol. But there's OSCAR docs on the developer website, so a proxy wouldn't be hard.

I doubt they'll kill OSCAR.

they can kill older clients if they kill the servers that use the unencrypted protocol, since AIM6+ uses a different server than login.oscar.aol.com. it's so easy bizkitz can do it.

They aren't eliminating OSCAR, just the old SNAC based login method. AIM7 simply uses the Kerebos protocol over SSL for its login, and uses SSL for all its connections, but its still just OSCAR over SSL.

They put a date on it. Installed 5.5 on my pentium 3 musicserver and got this.

"On August 16th, you will no longer be able to use the version of AIM you are on. To avoid a lapse in service, you must upgrade before August 16th. Don't worry, the upgrade process is quick and painless - we promise."

So we'll see what happens.

I tried it again, apparently it's been pushed up to the 25th now? Or are they just using a variable that sends today's date + 4-5 days? Either way, what a bunch of ass clowns.
